Summer Vacations in Hyannis Mass

My Dad was from Hyannis Ma. When I was a child we used to go visit my grandparents in Hyannis. I have a lot of fond memories of my summer vacations in Hyannis visiting with my grandparents. Grandma and Grandpa Sullivan lived on Carl Avenue in Hyannis.  They had a really cute little house with a nice big yard. I was always excited to go visit them.

I always got to stay in the basement with my brothers because there were 6 kids in our family and only 2 bedrooms. The basement was a really cool place to us because we don’t have basements in Florida. But it got a little spooky at night, especially when someone would walk in the house above because the floors would creek.

My favorite place to go was the beach. There were woods at the end of my grandparents property. We would go to the corner of the yard and there was a path that lead right to the beach. It was always an adventure going down the path. Grandma would always point out the different types of plants and take a leaf and crush it so I could smell the bayberry and other plants. She would also tell us stories about the railroad tracks that used to be where the path was. You could still see some of the railroad tracks in some places and there was a marker that told how far it was to Boston. We had many summers of fun playing in the woods, swimming and climbing on the rocks at the beach.

Another fond memory was going to Sea Street Market. My Dads cousins Dan and Edwina Slavin owned Sea Street Market. They used to let us run the register and I even got to go on grocery deliveries one year. We got to go on the Kennedy Compound and I thought it was really cool to bring the groceries into the kitchen. I was hoping to get to see Caroline because she was near my age & I thought it would be really cool to meet her. But I never saw her. She probably wasn’t there, but I could dream.

Then there was the Melody Tent.  We got to see a play every time we went to Hyannis. My favorite play at the Melody Tent was Fiddler on the Roof. And another favorite was going to Main Street and seeing all the artists on the sidewalks displaying their drawings and paintings. And the penny candy store was something we always looked forward to. We would fill up our bags with lots of candy some of it was actually a penny. Its not that way today I’m sure.

But most of all my favorite part of going to Hyannis was getting to visit with my grandparents. Grandpa with his magic pockets, always full of milky ways and three musketeers. He had such a great sense of humor and always told jokes. Grandma was always telling me stories about what things were like when she was growing up. Then she would stare at me and I would ask her why she was staring. She’d always reply, “I’m memorizing your face.”

And when it was time for our long drive back to Florida, there were lots of hugs, kisses and tears. I haven’t been to Hyannis in many years, I’m sure it’s changed a lot since my last visit. But in my mind I can still see Hyannis as it was when I was a child.
