What I Learned About Failure
What is Failure?
According to Merriam-Webster Dictionary failure is:
- omission of occurrence or performance; specifically : a failing to perform a duty or expected action <failure to pay the rent on time>
- a state of inability to perform a normal function <kidney failure> — compare heart failure (2) : an abrupt cessation of normal functioning <a power failure>
- a fracturing or giving way under stress <structural failure>
-
lack of success
-
a failing in business : bankruptcy
For this blog I will focus on the second to the last bullet point “lack of success.”
Here is What I learned about Failure.
Just because you fail at something doesn’t mean that you are a failure. Especially in business. We all have a different learning curve. Some people seem to catch on to things faster than others.
If you have tried and something that doesn’t work for you, then that just means that you need to shift gears and try something different or a different approach. The sad part is sometimes we give up right before we get our breakthrough.
“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.” -Albert Einstein
The thing I realized is, failing is teaching me a lesson about what works and what doesn’t work. Just think what if Thomas Edison stopped trying after his first failure.
“I have not failed, I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” ~Thomas Edison
Sometimes people don’t even try because of fear. I think not trying is the biggest failure. It’s failing yourself and not living up to your full potential just because you are afraid to fail.
I’ve learned that it’s Ok to fail as long as I tried and did my best, but to never give up on myself. Giving up would be worse than failing.
Lets look at Michael Jordan. Do you think that he was just born a great athlete. He may have had natural talent but how do you think he got to be the best. He didn’t let the little failures keep him from succeeding.
I’ve learned that your mindset is the most important thing when dealing with failure. How you look at, and how you frame it. Do you take it personally or do you take it as a learning experience?
”Success is going from failure to failure without losing enthusiasm.” – Ronald Reagan
I’ve learned that each failure is just a stepping stone on my way to success. That with every failure there is a new lesson and even if I fail again it’s Ok because eventually I will succeed. That is if I don’t quit.
So in conclusion what I learned about failure is that it isn’t really failure. It’s a journey to success. Failure is really a gift because without failing I would never have success. It’s what gives me the ability to know what works and what does not work.

Hi Dreirdre, I agree with you, failure is part of the ride and an important part of it. If you don’t fail, you don’t learn. Thanks for sharing
Thank for your comment Luis, It’s so true, if you don’t fail you don’t learn, it is part of the process.
