Water Helps Me Sleep
Do you have trouble sleeping at night? Do you toss and turn and just can’t get to sleep.
It used to happen to me all the time until I made a discovery about water.
I was at church one Sunday morning talking to a couple of my friends about being tired. So that’s not a new subject it seems like everyone is tired. We are so busy everyday going to work and church and school or any other activities that we may be in. It seems like there is never enough time in the day…
Well I guess that’s another blog I could write about.
Anyway, we were talking about how they had a hard time falling asleep and so I shared with them how I use water to help me sleep at night. I think there is some science behind it, I will have to do some research but I discovered it completely by accident.
The recipe for water helps me sleep:
- Get a glass and fill it with ice, then fill it with water.
- Stir until its really cold. I mean really, really cold.
- Then drink it down all at once. Don’t sip, gulp.
- Then go lay down. You will fall right to sleep.
Now how can I say water helps me sleep?
It just works and it works every time I do it. I discovered it one night years ago when I was tossing and turning and I couldn’t get to sleep no matter what I did. I got up and got a glass of water and I made it just like the instructions above and I drank it and went to lay down. I fell right to sleep I don’t even remember laying there I fell asleep so fast. When I woke up I was amazed at how good I felt and I couldn’t believe I actually went to sleep so fast.
One of the first things people ask me is “don’t you have to get up to go to the bathroom?” The answer is No, I don’t have to get up to use the bathroom and I sleep really soundly when I do this.
What then makes this work? Well this is only based on my observation, but I believe that it has to do with the fact that our bodies are 75% water and women especially dehydrate easily. Lets face it most of us don’t drink enough water. We drink coffee, tea and soft drinks. These do not give us the water we need as much as we would like to think they do. Tea is actually a diuretic, so if you drink tea all day you are running to the bathroom all day and you are actually losing water.’
- The first reason water helps me sleep has to do with the need our bodies have for water.
- The second reason water helps me sleep is that the water is cold so it cools down your core and your brain.
This is how water helps Me sleep. Give it a try, it might help you too.
I did some search to see if I could find anything to substantiate my findings and I discovered these articles:
Water – the magic elixir for restful sleep
Are there Benefits to Drinking Water before Bedtime?
Based on what I read in the articles I wasn’t far off the reason that water helps me sleep.

Deirdre,
Interestingly enough I also wrote a blog about sleeping. Having sufficient water was a must. However, I never thought about the idea of cooling the body temp and the brain as a means of sleep. I am guilty of chronic dehydration. I’ll have to chart myself and my physical condition and use of meds and see what difference it makes in my overall health. Thanks for the info.
Hi Cathy thanks for your comment! Cooling the core is an interesting concept. It really has helped me. Let me know your results.
Wow! Fascinating! I’m going to try it tonight!
Cathy I hope it works for you. Let me know if it does! Thanks for commenting,
Thats interesting… I always have a bottle of water beside my bed for during the night so I don’t get up and snack… but in never thought about chugging a glass of ice water before… I may have to try this. 🙂
Thanks for commenting Adrianna. Let me know if you try it and if it works for you.
Wow now that’s interesting never heard of water being a sleeping tonic.. and drinking or rather gulping ice cold I think would give me brain freeze… bu thanks for sharing
I haven’t experience a brain freeze drinking the whole glass down all at once. Give it a try sometime. Thanks for commenting Kelly.
