Procrastination
Do you tend to procrastinate?
Definition of Procrastination: To put off doing something, especially out of habitual carelessness or laziness. To postpone or delay needlessly.
OK I admit it, I’m a procrastinator. It’s so much easier to put things off than to do them, especially the things that are uncomfortable for me or that I don’t really want to do. The thing that I have to keep telling myself is I’m only making things harder on myself in the long run. I’m very good at doing all the little tasks that need to be done but the big tasks are harder.
When you were in school did you do the assignments or write your papers as soon as they were assigned or did you wait until the last minute and have to stay up all night until you got them done? I was the one who stayed up all night because I kept putting it off saying “I’ll do it tomorrow” So I guess it became a habit to procrastinate. It was a painful experience for me. I know I need to do something but I always seem to find something else to do. Usually its something that really doesn’t matter but I keep myself occupied with it.
I came up with some tips to help me overcome procrastination.
Tips for overcoming procrastination
- Make a to do list: Prioritize your to do list / tasks. Put the most important items at the top of the list.
- Schedule your time: Get a calendar and decide the hours you are going to devote to completing your to do list.
- Get rid of all distractions: Close Facebook, Twitter, your email, turn off the TV or anything else that distracts you. Use software like Rescuetime, StayFocusd or Freedom to block distracting websites, or block the internet if necessary.
- Make a decision that you are going to stick to your schedule.
- Just do it!
Procrastination causes guilt, stress and frustration. If you want to limit your guilt, stress and frustration, STOP procrastinating. You will get more accomplished and you will be a happier person. Make a decision to focus on the tasks you need to accomplish and just do it. You will be amazed at what you can accomplish.
