How to Break Old Patterns of Behavior
Sometimes we need to break old patterns of behavior in order to move forward.
Newtons Law: an object in motion tends to stay in motion
Sometimes we keep moving in the same direction because we’re moving in that direction. We just don’t realize it or we don’t know how to change directions.
We’re conditioned to look at problems rather than solutions. We need to stop dwelling on the problems and start looking for solutions.
Breaking your old patterns and developing new ones is a 2 step process.
Step 1: Interrupt the pattern
- First you become aware that your old pattern is getting in the way of you achieving your goals.
- Tell yourself that “this is an old pattern” that does not serve me well.
- Make a conscience decision to think or act differently.
Step 2: Create a new pattern
- The old pattern needs to be replaced with a new pattern, one that is more effective.
- Do not allow yourself to be a creature of circumstance, be a creator of circumstance.
We get so set in our ways sometimes we don’t even recognize that we have old patterns of behavior. We just go about our day doing the same things we’ve always done.
If those behaviors are not getting us the results we want then it’s really time to change those behaviors.
One behavior that comes to mind would be reading paper or watching the news every day. There are so many negative things in the news, that it tends to make me feel negative. If I’m thinking negative thoughts all the time how is that going to help me in reaching my goals.
The only thing it does is makes me think negatively and that will transfer over to my business.
The way to change that behavior is to change what I am reading or listening to.
I like to read positive and motivational books and listen to positive inspiring audios instead of the radio.
Putting positive things into your mind will make a difference when you are trying to change an old behavior.
How to Break Old Patterns of Behavior
In conclusion, the 2 step process can be effective in any aspect of your life be in business or your personal life. First you identify the old pattern and make a decision to change it. Then create a new pattern so you don’t go back to the old one again.

Great post Deirdre, you are spot on about the silent killer “Resistance” that seems to affect us all. It is difficult to overcome and we all need to work at it.
Thanks Alf, appreciate your comment. Resistance is a killer for sure.
Deirdre, Good post. People that aren’t working on their personal development find it hard to get rid of bad habits. People working on their personal development know that is takes a positive habit to replace a negative old habit.
Thanks for you comment Earl. Yes personal development is the key.
Great post Deirdre!
