Communication is Key
Definition: The exchange of thoughts, messages, or information, as by speech, signals, writing, or behavior.
I’m writing about communication because I think its a very important subject. Communication is how we find out about everything in every aspect of life. We communicate through words but we also communicate though body language.
I’m working on being a good communicator but sometimes it’s not that easy. One of the things I find myself doing is when I am having a conversation with someone, I don’t listen to what they have said completely before I decide on my response to them. I’ve realized that when I communicate with someone I need to listen completely to what they have said first instead of thinking while they are talking about what I want to say next. I think a lot of people do that. When someone is talking they aren’t really listening they are too busy talking in their own heads about the next thing they want to say.
Communication really has a lot to do with listening. Listening skills are important for good communication. I think that’s why people have so many arguments because they don’t really listen to hear what the other person is saying. Too many times we aren’t really interested in what the other person is saying, we just want to get our point across. That’s why we sometimes feel that someone is bull headed. That person just doesn’t hear what we are saying, they just want to press their point. I see this happening all the time and it’s very frustrating.
Everyone has a point of view and everyone should be able to express or communicate their point of view to others. It’s important for everyone to feel like they are important and that they have value. If someone is trying to talk to you about something and you shoo them away or don’t let them speak it tells that person that you do not value them or their opinion. We need to be more sensitive to others and their feeling and sometimes just listen and not speak.
Communication is Key in Business
Communication is key in business for good working relationships. When communication isn’t good between business associates it causes unnecessary stress, productivity goes down and conflicts arise. It can also cause you to lose money for your business by keeping you from making a sale.
When a customer doesn’t feel like you are listening to them they will walk away and buy from someone else. It’s important to be able to communicate effectively with your customers so they know that you value them and their business. Take the time to talk to your customers. Ask them questions about what they want, what their goals are and what their expectations are. Make them feel important by really listening to them. When customers feel important to you they will trust you and they will buy from you.
Communication is Key in Marriage
People get married and are supposed to live happily ever after…well that doesn’t always happen. Life happens and conflicts happen and depending on how you were raised, your ability to communicate with each other may or may not work in times of stress. I have been very fortunate that my husband and I have always made time to talk about the things that were going on in a calm and civilized manner most of the time. Usually we go in our room and discuss things without yelling or fighting.
I have seen other couples who fight with each other constantly, yelling and screaming and calling each other names. They are not communicating, they aren’t having serious talks about their issues. They just want it their way or the highway and neither is willing to give in. I think that poor communication is why a lot of marriages fail. After a certain point one or both just give up and say, its just not worth it anymore. We don’t see things the same and neither is willing to really communicate or listen to the other one. Good communication is key in any marriage.
Communication is Key with Children
How you communicate with your children is very important for them to grow up well rounded and able to communicate. When I was growing up it was common to here the saying “Children should be seen and not heard.” I never understood that saying and as I child it was frustrating to hear it. Children need to know that they have value too. That what they think is important to you. As parents I think its important to have open communication with your children after all you are the person who is supposed to love them more than anyone else in the world! If you tell them to be quiet all the time and never listen to them and never let them tell you how they feel as they get older they won’t feel like they can go to you and talk to you about anything. And maybe just maybe you’ll miss an opportunity to be involved in a important decision they make that would have kept them from making a mistake. Something to think about.
I’m sure my kids don’t tell me everything but there are many times that they do come to me to talk about things that could be considered private matters. Things that I would never have talked to my Mom about. I’m happy that they feel like I will listen and not judge them and I will give them my opinion and talk it out with them. They don’t always follow my advise but a lot of the time they do and I believe its because of the open communication I have always had with them. Good communication is key with your children if you want a good relationship with them.
Communication is Key
So in summary communication is the key to any successful relationship be it business, relationships, or with children. Lets all make a point to listen to each other and make improving communication an important part of our everyday.

Could not agree more… people really do have a hard time listening.. which strains the abilty to have effective communication… love the way you get your message across…

And I love what you said toward the beginning of your second paragraph… “I don’t listen to what they have said completely before I decide on my response to them.” I actually am putting together a blog post based on a statement similar to that!
