Bug Repellent Recipe For Kids and Dogs Using Essential Oils
Essential oils should be used sparingly on sensitive skin types like those of children and pets. Carrier oils and distilled water are great bases for making your own bug repellent for kids and dogs. Though you don’t have to limit the use to just them. You can use bug repellent made from essential oils on yourself, in your yard and around your home. It can rid your kids from itchy mosquito bites, prevent flea bites on Fido and keep ants out of your home.
Homemade Bug Repellent Recipe With Essential Oils
Homemade bug spray recipes that really work usually have one or more of these essential oils; Citronella, Clove, Lemongrass, Rosemary, Tea Tree, Cajeput, Eucalyptus, Cedar, Catnip, Geranium, Lavender, Mint, Peppermint. All of these have bug and mosquito repellent properties. For this recipe you’ll need a glass spray bottle.
DIY Bug Repellent Recipe Using Essential Oils
30 drops geranium essential oil 30 drops citronella essential oil
20 drops lavender essential oil
10 drops lemongrass essential oil
10 drops eucalyptus essential oil
10 drops rosemary essential oil
1 Tablespoon vodka or rubbing alcohol
1/2 cup Natural Witch Hazel
1/2 cup water (or vinegar)
1 teaspoon of vegetable glycerin (optional)
Add the essential oils into the glass spray bottle. Next, add the alcohol or vodka and shake to mix well. Pour in the witch hazel and shake to mix ingredients. Add the vegetable glycerin (optional-helps hold ingredients together) and shake vigorously. Finally, add the water and combine with more shaking. You’ll want to shake the spray bottle before each use. This helps combine the oils as they will separate from the liquids over time.
The bug repellent spray using essential oils is great for spraying on articles of clothing rather than directly on the skin. If using on sensitive types, like kids and dogs, test a small spot for redness or irritation before using on the entire body. Spraying a bandana for the dog to wear is best. Do not put the spray onto a collar that remains on the dog. The spray can be used in the yard and along baseboards indoors for ants and other crawling insects.
Alternative Ingredients For Potent Bug Spray Using Essential Oils
For an alternative you can add dried herbs to your essential oil bug repellent. Adding lavender sprigs or any mint species can give an extra potency boost to your homemade bug repellent for kids and dogs. If you don’t have one of the essential oils called for in the recipe you can leave it out or use another from the list above as a replacement. Blends don’t always smell great to everyone, you can play around with the oils to adjust the smell to your liking without losing potency.
