Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone

Do you have a problem doing something that is outside of your comfort zone?

For me I’ve always been a somewhat shy person…

I was the kid who always hid behind my mothers leg, holding on for dear life.

I’ve never really been the adventurous type. I like things to be safe.

Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone – 10 years ago

Ten years ago when when it was time to plan my 30th high school reunion I started asking around if anyone was planning a reunion. As it turned out no one from my class had gotten a committee together. So I said I would and I started looking for people to help me on the committee.

I had a really great committee and the reunion was a blast. The thing was I pretty much stayed in the background and I let the others (who were more popular in HS) run the Reunion.

I didn’t want to be the one speaking in front of everyone. So I stayed on the sidelines and watched and clapped.

Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone – 10 years later

Fast forward ten years…

Again no one was planning our 40th reunion. I thought to myself…”I must be crazy!”

Having a reunion is important to me. Some people don’t really care to see people they went to high school with, but for me I cherish my high school years, even though I was shy and I think a lot of people didn’t even know I existed…

So once again I started a committee for the reunion. This time we had less people willing to or able to join the committee. So there was more work for me and the other committee members to do. We did have a great committee though. We really worked as a team.

When it came time to decide who was going to MC the event I said I would do it. Thinking to myself…”What did I just do?”

One of the other committee members had written up a script from all the research that her and another member did…

She gave it to me and said OK great you can do it.:)

Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone – I stepped out

I’ve never been one to speak in public…

But at my 40th Class reunion I was the MC…

I stepped out of my comfort zone and I spoke in front of all my former classmates…

It felt good…

It felt like I was supposed to be there, speaking in front of a room full of people with a mic in my hand.

The funny thing is I wasn’t even nervous.

It felt right…

I know now that I can and I will speak again on a stage in front of people again.

Stepping Out of Your Comfort Zone – Conclusion

Thinking about my experience and how I have been holding myself back in life and in business by staying in my comfort zone. Taking that step out can be a hard thing to do. We think that people will judge us…

But really the only one judging us is ourselves. Most people don’t think the things we think in our own heads.

So if you have something you’ve been putting off doing because it’s not in your comfort zone

Step out of your comfort zone and take a chance on yourself…

If you mess up, that’s OK because you tried…

The next time you’ll be better!
